On Tuesday the Grade 9 Social Science class went on an outing to Langa.  It was a very interesting experience.  We saw how the people of Langa have rallied to create employment at the Community Centre.  We also saw many examples of Xhosa culture; from their local beer (umqombothi) to smileys (braaied sheep heads) and an African physician.

From a historical point-of-view, we saw the original Langa dompas office (where migrant labourers would have to go to be registered,) and went into an original hostel, where three labourers would have shared one small room.  Now these hostel rooms are rented by families.

The Grade 9 class left Langa with a greater understanding of the township culture and a critical awareness of the legacy of apartheid in South Africa.
