At our group of schools we try to ensure that everything we do is for a reason. The evacuation drills done termly ensure that our children are prepared for any situation that may arise. This week, the children and teachers were unaware that the drill would happen on Tuesday at 10 o’clock.

The learners heard the bells ringing and the teacher then told them that a drill was taking place. The children left their classes in an orderly fashion and went to line up on the netball courts. After arriving there, they were seated and a head count was taken. This information was passed on down the chain of command to the fire marshall, Mr Skippers. Once the all clear sign was given, everyone was allowed to go back to their venues.

We have made a choice at our school to make our children aware that incidences of this nature can occur and certain appropriate reactions should be displayed. The main emotion encouraged is calmness to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all.

In the next simulation we are hoping to ensure that another area will be cordoned off; as the school hall was the site of the “emergency” on Tuesday.
