How does one encapsulate the essence of 24 talented young leaders like we have at SVPS? I have had the privilege of working with these enthusiastic leaders in the making.  They are shaping and changing the face of Student Leadership at Sun Valley Primary School.

As of this year the process starts in Grade 6 in the third term where the Grade 6 pupils can apply for apprenticeship to the Leadership Programme. They are then mentored by the Student Representative Council for 6 months until their sifting process begins in Grade 7.

The SRC this year have taken on service projects to make an impact on the community. The team of 24 have been split into 3 sub-committees of 8 to run a different service project each.

The leadership of the sub-committees is taken on by the Student Representative Leadership (SRL).  Ethan Cunningham is heading the ON CAMPUS project and has taken on the enormous task of seeking funding to upgrade the Grade 1 playpark. This will include astro grass similar to the grass at Home Base, a large outdoor chess set, hop scotch and snakes and ladders. They have already secured R240 000 from sponsors to contribute to the project. This will be a real legacy left by the 2016 Prefect group.

Alexander Clarke is heading the OFF CAMPUS project and his sub-committee of 8 will find funding to do an awareness campaign of the signs and dangers of diarrhea. This will include flyers to be handed out at creches in Masi as well as posters. They will make up dehydration packs to be supplied to creches with the flyers and posters.

Josie Trope and Georgina Bester head up the Grade 7 Market Day  Project where the Grade 7’s raise money for their parting gift to the school. They are aiming at R40 000 which will go towards grand stands in the pool area.

What an energetic and motivated group of young people! They are too funny. Even when I ask them to pose for a “naughty” photo, they struggled to fulfill my request!
