Welcome to the new Grade 8’s!

Our new gGrade8's.

Our new Grade 8’s.

I know that a lot of new Grade 8’s at all schools ask the same question.  Why on earth do we have to learn Afrikaans??

Learning  a second language may be a bore, but it is hugely beneficial in many areas.  So, according to a few web sites, here are a few reasons why it is good for you to learn a second language:

  1. Learning a second language makes you smarter:-)  Research findings on learning a second language show that people who learn a foreign language have more developed thinking skills than those who don’t. (www.wyzant.com)
  2. Learning Afrikaans may improve your marks across the board!  Psychologists from York University in Canada, discovered that students who learn a foreign language get higher scores in their courses and tests. (www.collegeraptor.com)
  3. Being able to multi-task is a valuable life skill that is developed while you are learning Afrikaans.  Multilingual people, especially children, are skilled at switching between two systems of speech, writing, and structure. According to a study from the Pennsylvania State University, this “juggling” skill makes them good multitaskers, because they can easily switch between different structures. (www.telegraph.co.uk)
  4. Mastering the skill of speaking, writing and reading Afrikaans is something that you can be proud of and have a sense of achievement at the end of Gr 12 when you finish matric successfully!  Learning a new language is an achievement anyone can be proud of and is extremely satisfying. So, let us be positive, give it our all and have fun while we become smarter in Afrikaans!
