A couple of weeks ago we had an exciting delivery arrive in Grade One. We got our brand new Sebezaphones! What is a sebezaphone you ask?
It is a “phone” that is held by the child that amplifies their voice. What comes out as a whisper, is heard quite loudly by the child. It allows them to be the reader AND the listener. For the more nervous readers who don’t like reading in front of the class, this has been wonderful. They get to practice their reading as well as improve their fluency all through using the Sebezaphone. It is a fantastic tool in building reading confidence in our classes.
Our classes have been LOVING their phones. Each class has their own special colour. The Grade Ones have been using the phones during reading time – you won’t believe a whole class will be reading their books out loud to themselves (in a whisper) and the teacher doesn’t hear a thing! It has also helped our children hear certain phonemes and recognize the small difference in sounds. This is where the amplification of the Sebezaphone is very helpful. It also blocks out background noice which helps the child to focus.
They have been a great success in Grade One and the children are always eager to use the Sebezaphones. The confidence when reading has grown immensely and we can’t wait to see the continuing benefits of the Sebezaphone.
You can also buy your very own Sebezaphone at the school boutique at a cost of R60. A must for any new reader!
