The art of essay writing is a skill all English teachers strive to develop in their students. The Matric portfolio requirements include three 600-700 word essays, written in different genres.

In preparation for this, the Grade 11 students will begin the process writing task of Argumentative essay writing. This genre of essay allows the students to evaluate their ethical beliefs and standpoints by selecting relevant topics and statements; defending them; stating counter-arguments and refuting those. It’s all about the art of persuasion! A natural skill in most teenagers, right?

Topics generating interest range from immigration laws and refugee rights with regards to seeking asylum; separate education of boys and girls; human cloning research; and gender discrimination in salary scales.

Class discussion of these topics is already fueling heavy debate, and I look forward to reading some well crafted, well researched and carefully referenced argumentative essays.
