The Oxford English dictionary defines the word “collaborative” as the action of working with someone to produce something.

In Grade 3 we put a big emphasis on collaborative work as it is so important. It encourages students to reach out to one another in order to solve problems and share knowledge.

This not only builds collaboration skills, but leads to a more meaningful learning experience and a better understanding of those around them.

This term we focused on the creation of a planet, out of colourful collage materials. Each member was to bring a magazine and each group was given the name of a planet to prepare.

It was lovely to hear the buzz of excitement as the students were asking questions and explaining things to their group members. This time also encouraged other students to share and to listen to each other’s ideas.

Learning does not always have to be done in a book, sometimes learning gets messy.
