On the penultimate day of term 3, the SVPS U13 cricketers readied themselves for their tour to knysna, where previous SVPS U13 teams had left a worthy legacy of a cricketing excellence. The boys were determined to do exactly that, one last time.

The hours spent traveling up to Knysna were filled with raucous laughter, off-pitch sing alongs and a rapping masterclass by our very own, resident DJ’s, Jack Viljoen and Connor Dalton.

Upon the boys arrival at Point Lodge, they nestled into their respective chalets and got ready for our training session leading up to three intense days of cricket to follow. The boys were “pumped”.

Following our training session, the boys headed back to the lodge for a quick swim and to get ready for an opening ceremony at Knysna’s beautiful waterfront. The boys were hosted by O’Pescador for dinner before heading back to the Lodge for a team meeting.

Our first game was against a very talented Kenridge side, which we had met earlier in the season. Kenridge is a strong sporting school with a reputation of giving it their absolute all.

We knew we were in for a good day of cricket. After a high intensity warm-up the boys were ready for a good game of cricket. A brilliant bowling display by Kenridge saw Sun Valley in a spot of bother at 82 for 6. The dynamic ‘David and Goliath” like duo in the form of Cameron Miel and Warrick Jones, showed guts and determination to help their team to a respectable 150 at the end of their innings.

This turned out to be absolutely crucial to the boys success. It was evident that a top draw performance was needed in the field to restrict a powerful Kenridge side…and that is exactly what was produced. The boys rallied well in the field to rattle the Kenridge batsmen up front and some beautiful strike bowling saw early wickets fall for the boys in green. The boys continued their beautiful form throughout the innings and managed to restrict the Kenridge outfit to the necessary run rate. Brilliance in the field in the latter overs of the game by Warrick Jones, with a superb ‘one wicket’ run-out and a SENSATIONAL acrobatic catch in the over to follow really helped with the boys momentum and played a vital part in bowling the Kenridge side out for 137 with 9 balls to spare. An brilliant game of cricket!

On Day 2, the boys were up against Klein Boishaai (Paarl Boys) from Paarl. A fairly unknown opponent for Sun Valley left the boys not knowing what to expect, but after the previous days efforts in the field the boys were eager to impress. After winning the toss, skipper Ryan Coetzer and Vice Captain Warrick Jones, sent the boys in to bat.

A spanner was thrown into the works as it was discovered that one of the covers had leaked and allowed the previous nights welcome rain, to leave a moisture patch in the middle of the pitch. This delay shortened the innings and left each team with 40 overs to show what they had on offer.

Openers Ryan Coetzer and Giyan Sulcas, got the boys off to a flyer with great attacking batting upfront, striking at a run-a-ball in the opening overs. The batting dominance was continued by Giyan Sulcas as he went on to bat through the innings and score a memorable 92* off 102 balls, hitting 5 boundaries in his 147minutes at the crease. Shane Rainbird came in and added to the destruction with a rampant 55 off 44 Balls sending 7 balls to the fence. The boys managed a total of 232 in their respective 40 overs. Not knowing what to expect from the mammoth openers the Valley contingent of Key Lalor and Adam Saunders got the boys off to a sterling start. SVPS dismissed their opponents for 76. Adam Saunders was the pick of the bowlers taking 4 wickets for 12 runs from his 8 overs.

On the last day of tour, the boys enjoyed their final bacon and eggs breakfast and headed off to Wittedrift High school to face the strongest of our three opponents, Rhenish. The boys won the toss and were sent in to field. Beautiful bowling and fielding was once again the order of the day. The boys managed to get through the strong opening order of the Rhenish outfit with disciplined bowling and got them all out for 90.

A strong partnership from our openers, Ryan and Adam once again saw Sun Valley start on the front foot. A handy knock from Kyle Coetzee saw the boys through to an 8 wicket victory ahead of their journey back home.

Besides the incredible standard of Cricket on Tour, the boys had a great deal of fun. Garden Cricket, delicious meals and a late evening trip to George for some Ten-Pin Bowling provided the boys with plenty entertainment.

The boys had a wonderful time and showed some immense talent and skill to come back with three wins from three, allowing the legacy of Sun Valley Cricketing Excellence to continue yet another year. A special thank you to Mr Jooste, Miss Horne and Mr  Fourie for their superb coaching and care of our little superstars!
