At Sunbird we work hard to create a school environment that acts as a home away from home for our learners. We want school to be a place that students want to come to and we want each of our children to feel at home within their classroom. With this in mind, it is only fitting that the topic “Houses and Homes” makes up ur very first theme for the year.

As our Sunbirdies settle into their new surroundings, we have been reading “If I Built a House” by Chris van Dusen. This vibrant and imaginative picture book acts as the catalyst for discussion and learning about all things house related – the parts of the house, rooms and function, building materials and what exactly it is that makes a house a home.

The children are enjoying exploring this theme through various mediums as they paint, draw and construct houses out of different materials, design their dream homes, engage in fantasy play in the house corner of their classroom and share things from home with their friends during Show and Tell.

We are so proud of the way our precious pre-schoolers have dived head first into learning. We may only have been back at school for a few weeks, but Sunbird is already starting to feel a lot like home!
