Last week our children went to Rondevlei Nature Reserve for their last field trip as Grade Ones. The children arrived at school very excited and ready to try spot the shy and elusive Rondevlei hippo. Once at Rondevlei, they had a quick fruit snack and were ready to start the day!

The wonderful ladies of Cape for Kids then taught the Grade Ones about the flora and fauna that can be found at Rondevlei. They were taught why Rondevlei is a conservation area and the importance of wetlands. They were also treated to a puppet show where they had to help a young chick find his family amongst all the bird varieties found at Rondevlei. This year we were also lucky enough to have a visit from Tammy and Dumo who work at CTEET (Cape Town Environmental Education Trust). They introduced the children to the various careers in the conservation field and what they do as rangers at Rondevlei. Their talk definitely ignited excitement in the children to possibly look into a career in conservation one day!

After a quick snack, the children went for a guided walk around Rondevlei. They stopped in the various bird hides and we were treated to many sightings as the birds were out in full force thanks to the lovely weather on both days! Unfortunately, another year has gone by without the Rondevlei hippo being spotted!

As this is our last blog for the year, the Grade One team would like to thank both the children and parents for a wonderful year. It has been filled with lots of learning and excitement and we have been privileged to watch the children grow. We wish them all the best as they start their Grade Two journey in 2019!
