What do Antarctica, South Africa, South America, Australia and New Zealand have in common? That’s right, Penguins. The Grade 2s have settled in and dived head first into the land of the penguins. It has been extraordinary to watch these little minds discover that there are many other different spices of penguin, besides our beloved African penguin. This weeks focus was: ‘Where in the world are all the different penguins?’

After gliding through class discussions with some exciting digital input, we explored the behaviour and appropriate habitats of eight specific penguins. We then worked in our co-op groups to sort these species of penguin into the Southern Hemisphere on a world map.

Figuring out where to place the penguins on the world map was a group effort. However, it was no challenge for these little problem solvers. As they decorated their maps they deliberated and recalled where the different penguins lived and how they could live under harsh living conditions. The Grade 2s have a new appreciation for these incredible birds and are excited to continue learning about and exploring the world around them.
