How does bread rise?

Can fungi be a good thing? These grade 8 scientists were going to find out.

…Sharp bunch these grade 8’s

The students needed to follow their experiment instructions and work as a group to fill 5 beakers with the exact amount of yeast, sugar and water. Before all the Carbon Dioxide escaped, the students needed to cover the top of the beaker with a balloon. They then placed these beakers in areas varying in temperature to see what would happen.

Well lets just say there were a few explosive moments! Some balloons lost their lives in this experiment….

Overall the realization was that, firstly Carbon Dioxide is rapidly released when given the right environment, secondly yeast exploding on you is very smelly, and thirdly fungi can be useful if used properly.
