What a spectacular weekend of Sport as Sun Valley hosted the 5th annual Champions Shield Tournament. The event comprises of U13 Boys Soccer, U13 Five-a-Side Girls Soccer and Netball.

The event took a slight twist this year with the netball taking place on the brand-new multi-sport Astro. With only an hour to go until the Tournament began, the SVPS staff noticed that there were finishing touches to be done. As parents were parked waiting for kids to finish school, they watched in awe as 10’s of Staff, students and Estate members took to the courts to sweep, clean and put the final touches on this beautiful facility.

With 12 Soccer Teams, 12 Netball Teams and 6 Girls Soccer Teams in the Tournament, the field was littered with smiling, happy faces for a full two days. The parents were passionate and supportive throughout the event and were heard cheering for their loved ones.

The Friday saw round robin matches take place. The competition on both the Soccer Field and the Netball Courts was stiff. It was the perfect opportunity to get rid of the early season rustiness. The kids played a number of matches, and it definitely tested their fitness levels.

After finishing late on Friday afternoon, many of the visiting coaches and SVPS staff got together at Silvermine Academy (Sun Valley Group of Schools’ Independent High School) for some snacks and refreshments to laugh, connect and plan for the day ahead.

Saturday morning began with a bang. The girls Soccer kicked off in the inflatable arena and wow, was it intense! The Boys Soccer and Girls Netball had been divided into a Championship Pool (Top 6 Teams) and a Plate Pool (Bottom 6 Teams) and it was now a challenge as teams played strength vs strength.

After a delicious lunch, the tournament reached its climax as the PLAYOFFS took place. The nerves began to surface as discussion on who would take the Trophy in 2019 became apparent. Penalty Shoot outs in the Soccer, nail biting encounters and split second decisions were the difference on the day.

In the end, the results were:

U13 Girls 5-a-Side Winners = Sun Valley U13A

U13 Girls CHAMPIONSHIP Netball Winner – Sun Valley U13A

U13 Girls PLATE Netball Winner – The Netball Academy

U13 Boys CHAMPIONSHIP Soccer Winner – Kleinberg Primary School

U13 Boys PLATE Soccer Winner – Bergvliet Primary School

As with any Tournament, a lot of the focus is placed on the winners. However, I would like to congratulate and thank every single team, coach and parent that came to enjoy this wonderful tournament with us. People forget those that win the trophy, or those that score the goal, but we never forget the experiences enjoyed and connections made.

We hope to see all these special teams in 2020 for an even better, bigger Champions Shield!
