A topographic map is similar to a physical map in that it shows different physical landscape features. They are different however because they use contour lines instead of colours to show changes in landscape.

The Grade 5s created their own 3D relief map of South Africa and these maps showed important rivers, mountains and places.

We tackled this task in our co-operative groups, in a fun – and very messy – project. Careful instructions were given and the construction commenced.

It was great fun to see the groups tackle the instructions, and put them into place to give shape to their maps. They loved every moment as it gave everybody a change to be creative, while working as a group but above all to have fun while learning.
