Sometimes people travelling to other countries say that things are more/less expensive. These people are mistakenly only converting the price to rand to see which is more/less expensive. This apparent “more/less expensive” situation is a lure.

The correct way is to look at the cost of living and buying power.

The buying power of a currency is what things cost in a country in relation to what a person earns in that same country. By comparing the buying power of different currencies we are truly able to determine where things are more/less expensive.

The Grade 11 students have been assessing the purchasing power of many currencies against the one of the South African Rand. Here are some pictures summarising the sessions.
