Consumer Studies off to a flying start in Term Three.

The third term has had a tremendous start.  The Grade 11 Consumer Studies class baked bread and I was rather impressed with the results.  The bread made the entire school smell like Albany and made many mouths water.  I started with this practical as it is one of the skills/techniques that is required for a Grade 12, and was the[Read More…]

After weeks of working on our PATs (practical assessment task), the end is in sight.  The PAT is the entrepreneurial process in action.  The Grade 12 Consumer students have to come up with an original product that meets certain criteria as set out by the IEB.  Research has to be conducted to see if what they have in mind will[Read More…]

A GREAT start to Term 2 Consumer Studies!

A dressing was made and drizzled over the[Read More…]

Chocolate Crunchies or were they Brownies?

Chocolate Crunchies or were they Brownies?

I am so happy with the progress that the Grade 10’s are making.  Today we made Chocolate Brownies and it turned out to be a real lesson in temperature control.  Some of the Brownies were left in the oven a little too long and were rather crispy, but we don’t waste ingredients, and so we made chocolate crunchies instead!

And so 2016 Draws to a ‘Cheesy’ Close

For the final Consumer Studies Grade 10 practical we made Mac ‘n Cheese. It was a very successful practical where the students learned how to make a white sauce from scratch with a roux as the base. 2016 flew by and I am looking forward to 2017! Yum! Well done, Grade 10s!

Grade 10s Bake Millionaire’s Shortbread

Grade 10s Bake Millionaire’s Shortbread

To kick off this short week, the Grade 10 class baked Millionaire’s Shortbread. With recipes dating back to the early 1970s, this confectionery is a sweet treat made up of three layers: crispy shortbread, sticky and sweet caramel and lastly a thick layer of chocolate. The class did very well, despite having to be prepared after a long weekend. The smells[Read More…]
