One week into exams and things are looking good.

One week into exams and things are looking good.

Almost a full week into their first set of FET High School exams, and the Grade 10’s are taking the whole situation in their stride. The exams are a lot longer in Grade 10, some of them up to 3 hours in length.  The other major difference is that the exams counts 75 % of the term mark and the[Read More…]

Biscuits up for grabs!

Biscuits up for grabs!

Consumer Studies has started with a bang this year.  The Grade 11 students did very well and baked over 150 Chocolate Choc-Chip biscuits for a promotion at the Sun Valley Primary School Grade 6 Assembly.  We set up a very successful production line and the batch production concept from Business Studies was seen very clearly. In Consumer Studies in Grade[Read More…]

2018 PAT draws to an end.

2018 PAT draws to an end.

The Grade 12’s did their final Consumer Studies Practical during the June exams.  It was part of the PAT process and they really did a good job.  They had to come up with an original product for a high tea, covering certain practical skills that they have learnt since Grade 10 in the practical side of Consumer Studies. The criteria[Read More…]

And we start 2018 with a culinary BANG!

And we start 2018 with a culinary BANG!

The Grade 11’s had their first practical of 2018 today and it was a great success.  I always tell them that their first practical is a time for them to show off and show me what they can do.  Rachel made chicken skewers and a Thai inspired peanut butter dipping sauce and baked garlicky broccoli.  Findlay made Chicken Milanese with[Read More…]

Consumer Studies off to a flying start in Term Three.

Consumer Studies off to a flying start in Term Three.

The third term has had a tremendous start.  The Grade 11 Consumer Studies class baked bread and I was rather impressed with the results.  The bread made the entire school smell like Albany and made many mouths water.  I started with this practical as it is one of the skills/techniques that is required for a Grade 12, and was the[Read More…]

The Grade 12 PAT journey is coming to an end

The Grade 12 PAT journey is coming to an end

After weeks of working on our PATs (practical assessment task), the end is in sight.  The PAT is the entrepreneurial process in action.  The Grade 12 Consumer students have to come up with an original product that meets certain criteria as set out by the IEB.  Research has to be conducted to see if what they have in mind will[Read More…]

A GREAT start to Term 2 Consumer Studies!

A GREAT start to Term 2 Consumer Studies!

Term 2 kicked off with a great practical.  Rachel chose an interesting salad for us to try. The chicken was marinated overnight in Mustard, garlic and honey.  It was then stir fried during the lesson.  Avocado, corn, salad leaves, bacon and cherry tomatoes were mixed and the chicken was placed on top. A dressing was made and drizzled over the[Read More…]

Chocolate Crunchies or were they Brownies?

Chocolate Crunchies or were they Brownies?

I am so happy with the progress that the Grade 10’s are making.  Today we made Chocolate Brownies and it turned out to be a real lesson in temperature control.  Some of the Brownies were left in the oven a little too long and were rather crispy, but we don’t waste ingredients, and so we made chocolate crunchies instead!

Consumer Studies 2017

Consumer Studies is going full steam ahead.  We are very pleased with the results that the Matric 2016 class achieved and would like to congratulate them. In the practical component of Consumer Studies we learn about the factors to consider when catering from home, we look at menu planning, we learn how to set a table, we calculate the selling[Read More…]
