Work = Applied Force x Displacement

Work = Applied Force x Displacement

As we are heading towards the end of the term with great velocity, we have covered quite a bit of distance. This distance was not directionless though, but was only heading forward, thus termed displacement. We admit that there has been some friction along the road, but we are positive that putting enough energy into the system will maintain the[Read More…]

Welcome to Physical and Life Sciences

Welcome to Physical and Life Sciences

All of the Silvermine Academy Physical Science learners have been working very hard and, at times (on tired days), we had to apply a ‘net force’ in order to accelerate. A lot of energy has thus gone into our work and accelerate we have…  The Grade 11s have already finished their mechanics unit and are now applying their knowledge to problems to[Read More…]

Final Titrations in Physical Science

Final Titrations in Physical Science

As the final countdown begins for the Grade 12 Physical Science group – we have to do a Chemistry practical as part of their year mark. Titration is a procedure where we neutralise an acid with a base and determining the exact volumes needed. Piece of cake!

Marvellous Molecules

Marvellous Molecules

The Grade 10 chemistry class this week got the chance to build and learn about the shapes of covalent molecules. The Grade 10s followed instructions to build linear, angular and tetrahedral molecules out of jellytots and toothpicks. Hopefully the knowledge will be stored by eating the molecules afterwards!

Fun with the Periodic Table at SMA

Fun with the Periodic Table at SMA

After going through the examinations and doing all their corrections, the students decided to have some fun with the periodic table. Some much needed fun after the stressful exam period!

SMA: Physical Science – Grade 12 Electrochemistry

SMA: Physical Science – Grade 12 Electrochemistry

The Grade 12’s have just finished a section of work entitled Electrochemistry, in which they learn about oxidation and reduction in Galvanic Cells. For those of us who are not quite sure what that means, here is a video that the students love: Crash Course Science: Electrochemistry

SMA: Physical Science – Silly Slime

SMA: Physical Science – Silly Slime

The Grade 12’s learnt a lot about Organic Chemistry this term – one of the things they learnt to do was to make silly slime. The mixture of Elmer’s Glue with Borax and water produces a putty-like material called a polymer. In simplest terms, a polymer is a long chain of molecules. You can use the example of cooking spaghetti[Read More…]
