Happy Birthday Tata Madiba

Happy Birthday Tata Madiba

The day began with a fantastic early turn out by all our Sunbirdies.  Excitedly waving the flags that they had made, our Grade R’s made their way to the “big school” hall.  We were very proud of our learners as they sat perfectly still and quietly listened to Mr Keller, who told them all about the great Madiba. It was[Read More…]

Sunbird honours the Municipal workers

Sunbird honours the Municipal workers

As part of recognizing important members of our community, Sunbird chose to thank the men who collect our refuse each week. On Tuesday we surprised the dustmen when they came to collect our refuse, with biscuits iced by our Sunbirdies. The children had decorated a poster which they held up as the truck arrived. When they realised we were honouring[Read More…]

Mud fun at Sunbird

Mud fun at Sunbird

It is tough trying to keep children occupied in doors when all they want to do is go out and play in the rain.  On Friday when the rain subsided for a while, the children rushed outside to make the most of the little bit of sunshine.  Large puddles beckoned and the children succumbed to them.  In gumboots or barefoot,[Read More…]

Tasty shapes at Sunbird

Tasty shapes at Sunbird

The children learnt about shapes this week. To consolidate their learning, on Thursday, for Bake and Make, they cut different shapes out of bread. These shapes were then soaked in egg and fried to perfection by Hazel.   The Sunbirdies then got to top their “eggy bread” with Nuttella or syrup. The weather was particularly wet and the children enjoyed their[Read More…]

Scratch Patch Outing

Scratch Patch Outing

Teacher Stella reports: The Sunbird children all enjoyed a fun-filled outing to the Scratch Patch factory in Glencairn.  There, they explored the gem stone piles with enthusiasm.  They were all given a small packet to fill with their ‘precious’ finds.  Some children needed bigger packets and in the process of choosing the final batch of stones to take home, their[Read More…]

Sunbird goes digital!

Sunbird goes digital!

This week was very exciting at Sunbird as we got digitally connected.  On Tuesday, Teacher Jenny’s class enjoyed skyping one of their classmates, Tariq, in Australia.  They learnt about time zones as Tariq was getting ready to go to bed and here it was fruit snack time. One of the high lights of the experience was when the class sang[Read More…]

Spotlight on the Grade R’s

Spotlight on the Grade R’s

Our Sunbirdies have spent the last two weeks under the spotlight, singing, acting and dancing in preparation for their first assembly presentation and for Grandparents’ Day.  What looked like an impossible task then, finally resulted in a delightful culmination of talents. The speakers were eager to hear their voices on what one of the children called  the “microwave”( microphone) for[Read More…]

Pyjama Night at Sunbird

Pyjama Night at Sunbird

Another successful evening. We hope the parents enjoyed their evening as much as we did.  A big thank you to Abigail Stone and her family, who donated pizza from their Debonair’s franchise for all the children to enjoy. We had a busy evening crafting masks and icing biscuits before settling down to Jock of the Bushveld with a warm bowl[Read More…]

Lights, camera and almost action

Lights, camera and almost action

Rehearsals for the play, Cinderella and Rockafella are underway and the Grade R’s are being put through their paces.  There are two casts and each cast’s children have to follow a synchronized sequence of moves. The children have enjoyed dancing to the lovely music and we are looking forward to being centre stage in September.

Science at Sunbird

Science at Sunbird

In keeping with our theme “opposites attract” we introduced magnets to the Grade R’s for our Science Expo day on Thursday.  The children had great fun finding out about objects that are attracted and repelled by magnets.       Each class made different magnetic items to take home and play with.  They hypothesized and experimented using their magnetic wands, collecting[Read More…]
